The UTD/Callier Center has developed a program to address falling in high risk individuals. It is hoped that efforts in this area will not only increase public awareness of the impact of falls but also improve the quality of life for those at risk for falling.

Treatments are available to:

• Help reduce feelings of dizziness and imbalance

• Increase physical strength

• Promote mobility

What the Callier Risk For Falling Program does.

A typical evaluation with an Audiologist lasts four hours. This is divided into two sessions. The Audiologist will assess each individual, and provide a plan of action. There are measures individuals can take to maintain an active life style and reduce their risk for falling. New techniques can be learned to reduce feelings of dizziness and imbalance, increase physical strength and move around safely.

Recommendations might include:

• Referral to a physician for further evaluation or medical treatment

• Review of prescription medications

• Physical therapy under the direction of a phyical therapist

• A physical conditioning program following medical clearance

• A home vestibular therapy program

• Environmental modifications

What testing will be done?

Complete hearing evaluation - some disorders of hearing help us diagnose balance disorders
Screening tests for factors which increase the risk of falling
Functional tests of balance
Electronystagmograhy (ENG) or Video Electronystagmography (VNG) - to assess the ear and brain’s ability to maintain balance

Medicare and most other health insurance companies will pay for the testing. It is always best to check with your insurance company before making your appointment.
