Hyperacusis Facts

Hyperacusis is the condition in which ordinary sounds seem unpleasantly loud or painful.

In fact, to the hyperacusic individual, everyday listening environments such as restaurants, cocktail parties, and sporting events can be uncomfortably loud or even painful.

Hyperacusis is commonly associated with tinnitus, but some people experience hyperacusis without tinnitus.

While many people may feel the need to wear earplugs in order to alleviate the discomfort of everyday sounds, wearing earplugs often or for long periods of time can actually make the hyperacusis worse.

Hyperacusis, like tinnitus, may result from overcompensation within the central auditory system.

There is help for individuals with hyperacusis through a treatment similar to Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.
