UT Southwestern - UTD Callier
Child Development Program

The Callier Child Development Program is an active, nurturing, learning environment for children between the ages of six weeks and 6 years. Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children since 1986, Callier enables children to develop positive attitudes about themselves as they learn daily routines, master new skills, expand interests and participate in planning and decision-making.
Learning activities and experiences are provided in a stimulating, creative atmosphere designed to encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery, facilitated through use of a supportive staff-to-child ratio based on optimal guidelines for each age group.

Admission requires affiliation with UT Southwestern Medical Center.

(Linited enrollment opportunities are also available for employees of UTD/Callier Center for Communication Disorders.)

The Callier Child Development Program is a collaboration between the University of Texas at Dallas and UT Southwestern Medical Center. Childcare and educational classes are provided for infants through kindergarten.

The Child Development Program is accredited through the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs and has been operating under its standards since 1986. Classes for two-year olds through kindergarten include students and staff from the Dallas ISD Deaf Education program, providing a unique and enriching experience for all.

Program Goals:

* To provide for all aspects of a child's developmental needs including communication and language skills, physical abilities, emotional and social growth, and cognitive development.

* To emphasize learning as a social process that stresses exploration and interaction with adults, other children and materials.

* To emphasize learning as an active process, utilizing experiences that are concrete, real and relevant to the lives of young children.

* To foster an environment in which children have an opportunity to communicate, play and develop friendships with children whose interests, abilities, levels of hearing and/or methods of communication may be different than their own.

Curriculum:

Curriculum is based on High/Scope and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Kindergarten. On-going portfolio assessment is documented using the High/Scope Child Observation Record. Qualified, degreed teachers encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery with supportive staff child ratios based on optimal guidelines for each age group. Teaching teams rotate with their classes through the infant/toddler years and again through three years of preschool; kindergarten teachers do not rotate.

Cooperative Programming with DISD/Dallas Regional Day School for the Deaf

All classes for children 2 and older include some students with hearing loss in collaboration with Dallas ISD/Dallas Regional Day School for the Deaf. This cooperative programming allows children with hearing loss to be integrated into the regular preschool setting while receiving specialized services. Teaching teams for these integrated classes include both child development and deaf education staff. Curriculum planning and implementation are shared activities.

Parent participation is always welcome; an active Parents' Association helps to maintain a close partnership between home and school.
